Projects & Advocacy

The Camps Bay & Clifton Ratepayers Association represents the interests of residents and property owners on matters that affect the character, environment and quality of life of our neighbourhoods. Our work ranges from planning and heritage matters to environmental protection, infrastructure, public safety and broader civic issues. Some matters require a simple representation to the relevant authority; others may involve lengthy engagement, specialist advice or, where necessary, legal action.

Planning & Development

A significant part of the CBCRA’s work involves monitoring planning and development matters that may affect Camps Bay and Clifton. We engage with residents, property owners, applicants, developers and the City of Cape Town on planning applications, departures, consent uses, title-deed restrictions and other land-use matters.

Where proposed development may adversely affect the character, heritage, infrastructure or residential amenity of the area, the Association may comment, object or assist affected residents in understanding the appropriate processes.

Heritage & Built Environment

Camps Bay and Clifton have a distinctive built character and important heritage resources that require careful protection.

The CBCRA advocates for responsible development that respects applicable planning and heritage legislation and seeks to ensure that changes to our neighbourhoods are considered in the context of their wider impact on the community.

Environment & Ocean

Protecting our extraordinary natural environment is central to the CBCRA’s work. We engage on matters affecting beaches, the coastline, mountain slopes, waterways, public open spaces and biodiversity, and advocate for responsible management of environmental resources.

Marine pollution and the environmental impact of sewage disposal remain matters of particular concern, and the CBCRA continues to support improved protection of our coastline and ocean.

Roads, Traffic and Infrastructure

The Association raises and engages on infrastructure and service-delivery matters affecting the community, including roads, traffic safety, sewerage, stormwater, public spaces and municipal services.

Where appropriate, we communicate residents’ concerns to the City and other responsible authorities and advocate for practical measures that improve safety and protect the quality of our neighbourhoods.

Community and Civic Advocacy

Not every issue falls neatly into planning or environmental matters.

The CBCRA provides an independent civic voice on a wide range of matters affecting Camps Bay and Clifton and works with residents, the City of Cape Town, our Ward Councillor, neighbouring civic organisations and other community bodies where appropriate.

Our role is to ensure that community interests are represented and that residents have access to information about matters that may affect them.

WHEN FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED

Some matters require specialist professional advice, formal objections, appeals or legal intervention.
The CBCRA considers such action according to the circumstances of each matter, its significance to the broader community and the resources available to the Association. As a voluntary civic organisation, our ability to undertake this work depends upon the support of our members and donors.
